Well today was it. The last long run of my marathon training. 22 glorious miles on a sunny, January afternoon topping out at 45 degrees. Normally long runs are done on Saturday, but I couldn't resist the promise of "nice" weather to run outside. I still had to don gloves and a headband as the wind still had the winter's nip to it, but at least I didn't need multiple layers.
My hip started to complain after mile 9, and I decided it to split my run between outside and the treadmill just in case I needed to cut the run short. (didn't want to be 5 miles from home and have a problem) So I ran 10 miles outside and 12 miles inside.
As happened the last time, miles 16-19 were the hardest. At mile 20 I got my second wind and, even though my hip was "talking to me", I felt really energized; like I could run forever. I completed my 22 miles in 4 hours and 30 minutes. After some abs and some stretching I enjoyed a really good cup of tea.
Now it's taper time. For the next two weeks, my longest run will only be 12 miles. I'll be decreasing the mileage until race day in order to give my body a chance to rest and recover from the training so it's at peak form for 2/15/09....race day.
The only thing left to do is figure out what to do with all the free time I'm going to have.
